Ender pearls
Vanilla short-distance teleport. Available from day one. The everyday-mobility tool.
Ender pearls are the everyday traversal tool. Throw → teleport to landing point → take a small amount of damage. Available from day one, no rank gate.
How it works (vanilla recap)
- Throw an ender pearl
- Wherever it lands, you teleport to that spot
- You take some damage on landing
- Range: ~30 blocks ground level, ~50–60 blocks if thrown high
- Can pearl through 1-block gaps and into closed spaces (you arc into them)
Where to get them
- Endermen — guaranteed pearl drops
- Stronghold chests — common find
- End city loot — rare, in shulker boxes
- Trading with other players — common at shops
The endermen-in-warped-forest farm pattern is the standard pearl factory. A few sessions of pearl-grinding nets you hundreds of pearls.
Best practices
Throw high for distance
A pearl thrown straight ahead lands ~30 blocks away. A pearl thrown at a 45° upward angle lands ~50–60 blocks away. Pearl arcing is the difference between hopping a wall and hopping a building.
Don't pearl into solid blocks
You stop one block before. If you misjudge and pearl right into a wall, you take damage but go nowhere. Aim for an open space or a gap.
Pearl into water to negate fall damage
A pearl thrown into a 1-deep water pool above ground level lands you safely with no fall damage. Useful for cliff descent.
Stack pearls in your hotbar
Carry 16+ pearls when exploring far. Running out 800 blocks from base is a long walk.
What pearls won't do
- Pearl through 1-block solid walls — they bounce off solid blocks (open windows or 1-block gaps work, solid walls don't)
- Pearl onto a slime block and take no damage — the damage is on the teleport itself, not the landing physics
- Pearl across dimensions — they work within the dimension you're in (Overworld, Nether, or End)
- Cover real distance — they're short-range. For long trips, use Nether portals or sign teleporters.
Damage mitigation
- Wear protection-IV armor for partial damage reduction
- Use Feather Falling boots — also reduces pearl damage
- Drink Resistance potions before a pearl chain
- Eat right before to ensure you can heal back fast
Common patterns
"Pearl chain" travel
Throw → land → throw → land. With ~16 pearls and full health regen between throws, you can cover ~500 blocks in under a minute. Great for crossing flat terrain or deserts.
Pearl into a sealed room
Throw at a 1-block window to teleport inside. Useful for puzzle rooms, hidden bases, dungeon entries — anywhere you need to get into a closed space without breaking blocks.
Pearl-stasis chambers
Advanced: shoot a pearl into a chamber that flushes water through it, freezing the pearl in place. Activate the chamber later from anywhere — instant teleport to the chamber. Setup takes practice; it's a common base-defense or escape mechanism. Vanilla mechanic, fully supported.
Combat pearl
Throw a pearl behind your enemy mid-fight, teleport to their back, swing. Risky but stylish — only works if you can survive the pearl damage AND the enemy doesn't turn fast enough.
